Synergy Exhibition March 2023

Next spring second year students studying on our BA (Hons) Fine Art course will be presenting their exhibition Synergy to take place at Middlesbrough based art space, Pineapple Black. Studio preparations and fundraising events are underway for the multi-disciplinary show which will be the first for this group of students that are working together to organise, create the work and curate the exhibition.

The pieces will include a mix of practices and research that demonstrates the versatile studio environment and the collaborative nature of the degree programme. The exhibition has been created with the aim to bring the class together through the exhibition.

The group commented, “As a collective, we have a lot of different ways of working. The artists range from photographers, painters of all types and installation artists. The concept behind Synergy was to bring our class together no matter how different our work is or even how different we are as people and put on a show together in the joint appreciation for Fine Art.”

Developed from a module brief the student’s pitched their ideas to each other before scouting creative spaces in the area to exhibit “After this initial meeting, a small group of the artists visited local galleries around Middlesbrough to share our groups vision with them and successfully find a spot for our show.”

Inspired by the collaborative nature of of the project and work process the name Synergy comes from the meaning itself being “The combined power of a group of things when they are working together.. as a collective we thought that this fit what we wanted to stand for perfectly and represents our combined force to elevate a space together. It also just sounds cool!”

The exhibition is fully self-directed which means the students are working hard to fundraise and market the show through a series of events and ideas, “As this exhibition is a self funded project, as a group we are currently holding fundraisers and events around the university campus in Hartlepool. We are currently working on our online presence as well and share details of all events, pieces of work from the featured artists and even behind the scenes photos and videos of the teams progress within Synergy.”
